The Challenge

My self-invented challenge was to sail around Britain, excluding the north of Scotland and climb the three highest peaks of England, Wales and Scotland.

Starting in Penzance we sailed clockwise around Britain up the welsh coast to reach the first mountain and the highest in Wales at 1085m - Snowdon.

Once back on the water we continued north to the Lake District before travelling inland to Scarfell Pike. This is the highest mountain in England at 978m.

Sailing north again we finally reached Fort William and Ben Nevis my final mountain, the highest in Scotland (and Britain) at 1344m.

At Fort William we took advantage of the Caledonian Canal in order to short cut to Inverness. At this point we started turning south down the North Sea, and finally returned via the English Channel.

Safety

Apart for the Safety Gear carried, it was important to report our intensions to third parties, in case the worst happened.

Before leaving Penzance a new CG66 was lodged with HM Coastguard in Falmouth, including all the new safety equipment and new shore contacts.

Three shore contacts were issued with information sheets including full specifications of Silverwind and contact details for each UK Coastguard Station.

The Epirb was registered with the same three shore contacts.

Before each passage and when safely in port, I reported into both the Coastguard and at least one shore contact. The shore contact was also issued with an ETA, a planned destination and the name of the local Coastguard station.

I also used the shore contacts on the mountains.
