Penzance Sailing Club

Friday 3rd September 2004

By the time the second low tide had come around it was clear to us that Port William is the smelliest harbour you would ever wish to come to. A combination of sewage and rotten fish delayed cooking dinner for a few hours.

The strong wind had come through as forecast but there were signs that it would ease in Saturday to enable us to move to Portpatrick. However for now Silverwind was being blown 15 feet off the pier by a force 6. We duly move further back into the harbour to gain more shelter.

As we sat down trying to finish “The Times” crossword I was starting to get the idea that they do not get many yachts in Port William. By this point I think I had seen every member of the small population down on the pier – looking down at us in wonder! Even the woman in the library knew of our visit – as I wrote my address down a “Silverwind, Harbour” (I am now a member of their library for the next three months!)

Tea consisted of a tin a Chilly that I had been specially saving for Jenny’s arrival. This tin was one of 6 that were bought by Jenny a few years ago as “emergency” food for Imperial College Yacht Club trips. The other 5 were consumer on a rough trip back from the Channel Island earlier in the year. In fact over time I think this tin has done enough miles to qualify for its Yachtmaster.
