Penzance Sailing Club

Thursday 5th August 2004

NeylandAfter two long days I decided on an unplanned stop in Neyland to recover. Although the guide states that Diesel AND Petrol are available on the pontoons in Neyland, I was not surprised to find Petrol in absence. Today’s trip for petrol was four miles up a steep hill, which was only made worst by the fact that this is “petrol country” with the local fuel pipeline closer than the petrol station.

Now for the history bit – on my travels I took a tour of the local historical areas. Neyland was a little village until Mr Brunel decided to bring the GWR Railway here in the 19th Century to form an international port. In fact most of the history I read about Neyland relates in some way to Brunel but after he died so did the high times for the town.

NeylandWhile I has sailing in on Wednesday night there was a yacht race taking place in the Haven so on Thursday night I set off to find the Yacht Club. Neyland Yacht Club is set on the Haven shore facing Pembroke Dock and Thursday evening is dinghy sailing night. The club is very much orientated towards encouraging young sailors with Monday night youth racing night and Tuesday being youth training.

The sailing fleet is a real mix of new and traditional designs with a number of different asymmetric racers. I was made very welcome and given mountains of advise about Jack Sound and Ramsey Sound which would be my shortcut going north to Fishguard.

All in all Neyland is a very nice place and I was please to have time to look around but I must be making tracks. The tide is critical for the next leg so an early morning (3am) start will be called for on Saturday morning.
