Saturday 9th October 2004

It was time to make up some time. Friday had been one of those days where everything had said not to go, the weather forecast was not great, the sea was still big and I was tired after Thursday. But in the end the day had turned out nice and I was searching for things to do on land.

PeterheadThere was a steady wind from the north, which pushed us along nicely after motoring out of the harbour at 9am. The ultimate plan was to get to Peterhead sixty-five miles down the coast but this would require everything to go our way. In order to help us on our way we motor sailed for the first four hours covering a total of just over twenty-seven miles and making planning the rest of the day just that bit easier.

If Peterhead was out of the question there was always Fraserburgh twenty miles earlier. However, as we past the harbour entrance under full sail at around 5pm all was going good. As Fraserburgh does not encourage yachts and Peterhead has a marina the decision was quickly made to continue.

The tides had worked perfectly all day, for the first five hours of the day it had been with us. Then while away from any headlands (where it would be likely to run strongest) it ran against us, now as we rounded Rattery Head the tide assisted us again on a fast run south.

This point was very significant as this corner of land marked the northeastern corner of our journey; we were now to go south for the first time in months and were the furthest from home. After a smooth run down wind for a few hours and clearing things with the port authority we finally motored into Peterhead at 10pm. Once at the marina we were guided to our berth by a playful seal!
