Sunday 15th August 2004

It would have been rude of me to invite Ed up to Snowdonia just for the day to climb Snowdon. Therefore, Sunday was devoted to finding a Mountain in Snowdonia that we had not been to before – a hard task we thought.

We soon had our sights on “Cnicht” northwest of Blaenau Ffestiniog and by 11:00 we had finished our Breakfast on route and were sitting in the car park just outside the big slate mining town.

SnowdoniaAt this point I will have to admit that in order to save space on Silverwind I did not bring all the Snowdonia maps. We had maps for most of northern Snowdonia but our route today was going to be on the very edge of the coverage. Even this should have been fine had it not been that we got carried away walking up a road on the first section of our route and walked about 1 mile off the map!

When we found a large reservoir surrounded by three small mountains none of which was mapped, we knew we were a bit off the beaten track! Not really wanting to backtrack down the road, but knowing we could if we needed to, we proceeded to head north around the side of the corrie in which the reservoir sat in order to get back on track.

We took lunch with panoramic views down to the coast at Porthmadog. After lunch we finally made our way back onto the map not before making a mental note of the terrain hidden under the margin!

We decided that after our little excursion around the hills, Cnicht would have to wait for another day although we were almost at the same height. That is not to say we didn’t have a good day we spent the best part of the rest of the afternoon exploring the ruins of slate minings and the miners’ dwellings in the valleys around Cnicht.

We returned to the car for the short drive back to the boat and took in the town centre of Pwllheli in order to pick up a fish and chip tea. After saying good buy to Ed I sat down to rest after a long weekend. It is currently looking good to sail north to Holyhead on Tuesday.
